  • MERIC Grant Frequently Asked Questions
  • MERIC Funded Projects

What can MERIC grant monies be used for?

Project related…

  • Administrative/technical support (e.g., clerical, statistical, research assistants including students)
  • Supplies, expenses, and equipment (e.g., mailings, survey instruments, incentives, transcription, software)
  • Communication between study personnel (e.g., web/phone conferences)
  • Dissemination (e.g., conference registration, travel for approximately on person, expenses related to manuscript development and submission)

What activities are NOT covered by grant monies?

  • Indirect or facilities costs
  • Salaries for faculty
  • ScholarRx/USMLE-Rx account costs
  • Third party commercial education products

What do you mean that projects must utilize ScholarRx or Qmax products?

Grant projects must in some way explore a research question that interfaces with one of our products, including Rx Bricks, Rx Bricks Create, Qmax questions, Flash Facts, and/or Express Videos.

Can investigators collaborate with ScholarRx to obtain internal application data?

Yes. Data requests will be evaluated on a case by case basis. No user identifiable data will be provided.

Will ScholarRx accounts be provided for free to funded projects?

No, however institutions currently not using ScholarRx/USMLE-Rx products should contact our academic solutions group at info@scholarrx.com if interested in facilitating a pilot program.

What are some examples of general research questions that might be explored?

  • In the flipped-classroom setting, does the use of ScholarRx curriculum bricks as pre-class preparation material increase student performance relative to other preparatory assignments?
  • How does question wording interact with student factors (e.g., race, location) to impact learning?
  • How does question feedback design (e.g., visuals, mnemonics) relate to retention?

Can projects be used to build something complementary to ScholarRx (e.g., new curricular “bricks”)?

Yes.

Will renewal funding be available?

Depending on project results and outcomes, some project teams may be eligible to apply to future calls for renewal funding.

Will ScholarRx be involved in the authorship team?

  • Typically, no. We expect scholarly products resulting from this grant funding to be independent of ScholarRx.
  • In certain circumstances where collaboration with ScholarRx team members is robust, it may be appropriate to have ScholarRx-affiliated coauthors.

Do you have an example of a funded MERIC proposal?

You can view a funded grand proposal here.

Where do I submit my MERIC proposal?

You can email your MERIC proposal to info@scholarrx.com. Put "MERIC Proposal" in the subject line.
