Training Global Health Advocates
March 15, 2025
This video features a webinar hosted by ScholarRx with renowned global health expert Dr. Graham Lister, lead editor of the ScholarRx Global Health brick collection, exploring how medical students can become effective global health advocates.
Dr. Lister, a sociologist and economist with an international reputation for work on health policy, shares insights from his extensive experience working in 25 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia with organizations including WHO, DFID, IBRD, and USAID. As a Senior Fellow of the Global Health program at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, he brings a wealth of knowledge on global health diplomacy and governance.
Moderated by Catarina Pais Rodrigues, Director of Support and Training at ScholarRx, the webinar explores:
- Why global health is a critical issue in today’s interconnected world
- How medical education can prepare students to address global health challenges
- The importance of understanding different health systems worldwide
- Practical approaches to global health advocacy at individual, community, and global levels
- Ethical considerations in global health interventions
- Current challenges in global health advocacy and strategies to overcome them
Dr. Lister emphasizes that global health isn’t just about addressing specific diseases or pandemics, but encompasses planetary health, equitable access to medicines, antimicrobial resistance, and the commercial determinants of health. He argues that health professionals have an ethical responsibility to address factors affecting health that transcend national boundaries.
The discussion highlights the value of understanding diverse health systems and learning from approaches developed in various contexts, including low-resource settings. Dr. Lister makes a compelling case for medical students to embrace their role as global health advocates and develop skills in listening, understanding, and persistent advocacy.
This webinar is part of ScholarRx’s mission to build a healthier world through accessible, sustainable medical education, showcasing the free, open-access Global Health brick collection available through the Brick Exchange.
